I suspect that "Baby" Bush actually believes that the Patriot Act is no more restrictive of speech and civil rights than previous laws.

Today a man claiming to be Deep Throat has sparked a number of stories in print and on air. These stories remind me of the power of the press to unseat a President by shining the light of publicity on just what is going on in government.

This is exactly what we lack most today: an accurate and persistent report of what the government is doing: not just the Executive Branch, but the Congress and courts as well.

Had Deep Throat been around in the months leading up to our invasion of Iraq, he might have told reporters of the daily bombing of Iraq for at least a year before Congressional permission was given to invade.

Would this information found the light of day? As things stood, while the daily press reports said one thing about Iraq (no WMDs, no al-Qaeda link proven, etc.) the editorial pages were saying another: Saddam was a dangerous man and Iraq had to be neutered to save democracy from certain destruction.

Things have changed. Woodward and Bernstein didn't do it alone: they needed Ben Bradlee and Kay Graham to see that their stories got printed despite immense pressure from the NIxon White House.

Would anyone now have the same courage, or even the desire, to emulate the example set by Bradlee and Graham?

I love the daily show & hbo, CSPAN etc but it's time we all face facts - a MASSIVE boycott of cable TV/Dish is the only thing that will shake some sense into these greedy MFs. It must be well timed & well organized.

We know this - african americans walked to work in the hot sun rather then sit in the back of the bus & we can't stop sitting on our asses & wathcing TV. It summer time! the best time to get out & tune out.

Journalism has lost its way because it has become part of an infrastructure for which the delivery of news is at best a byproduct of its primary function, which is to deliver an audience to advertisers.

Journalists must connect themselves directly to their consumers, that portion of the public truly interest in keeping track of what's really going on. The Web can be the vehicle for this.

What is needed now are some demonstration programs to arrive at an economically viable model where the consumer pays for news and analysis and receives it without intermediaries.
