As a dumb, insulated schmuck from Long Island, Howard Zinn helped teach me to see with different eyes. And that's the job.

Howard was a mentor and I had the honor of his company as my cellmate in 1972 (3)?, Roxbury , Mass. following an intense confrontation and occupation of B.U. Pres. John Silber's office in protest of B.U.'s invovemant with the war machine and intensified bombing in SE Asia. 62 students and a lone professor put it on the line. Howard was fearless , tenacious , tactically sharp, brilliant mind , genuine and kind...truly uplifting to be with such a wise and humble leader and teacher.

I was familiar with Zinn during my college days and had the good fortune to hear him speak a few years ago in a small little town in north central massachusetts. The audience was wowed by his perception, gentle demanor, and claririty of vision...we have lost a great one.
